Ascent of Brigantine Refuge High Point on 2012-02-26| Date: | Sunday, February 26, 2012 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Brigantine Refuge High Point | | Location: | USA-New Jersey | | Elevation: | 13 ft / 3 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThis highpoint is located at the Holgate Section of the refuge at the southern end of Long Beach Island. All access to the Holgate section is prohibited from April 1 to September 1 to allow birds to nest in peace and safety.
From the Garden State Parkway, take exit 63 for NJ-72 east toward Manahawkin. Drive almost 7 miles to the junction with Long Beach Boulevard on Long Beach Island. Take the boulevard south for 9.3 miles to its end at a parking area for the wildlife refuge.
The areas shown as high ground on the topo are almost exactly one mile south of the parking area, and are now a large "plateau." More prominent dunes are seen along the way, but it's impossible to say where true highest ground is, and ENTRY ONTO THE DUNES IS VERY STRICTLY PROHIBITED. My advice: Enjoy the hike for the full mile or more, observe the dunes from closeup, resist the urge to trespass, and call it "good."
