Ascent Trip ReportAn easy trail/ridge walk with short bushwacks ...... 4+ miles, 2 hours RT including all of the checking/off trail hikes.
From Central Avenue, in historic downtown Hot Springs north of Bathhouse Rows, we drove west on Whittington Avenue to a left turn on West Mountain Drive which winds/climbs its way to West Mountain Lookout Parking at the East Peak (elevation 1100'). We parked here, this was my TH for the Sunset Trail.
I walked the Sunset Trail westbound for about 2 miles to the summit of Music Mountain. The trail goes over 4 subpeaks on its way, the main (highest at 1260') one being a 200 yard long ridge with 4 Communication Towers. All of these subpeaks are to the side of the trail, I went off trail (open woods) to ensure touching its HP.
A lesser trail leads 100 yards right of the Sunset Trail to the summit of Music Mountain ..... wooded with no views, I found the 3 BM "US Coast & Geodetic Survey Triangulation Station, West 1940, West No 1, West No 2." all set in a 12" high pipe.
A Canister (a glass jar covered with a rusted can) is on the ground beside the center BM .... full of crumpled papers, the last to enter was "12/31/11 -Steve & Matt Mueller, Colo Springs, CO".
Dan "Wingfoot" Bruce's TRAIL ETIQUETTE RECOMMENDATION (in "Thru-Hikers Handbook for The Appalachian Trail") as it applies to the use of cell phones on the trails ...... before using the cell phone ask yourself, "Would I take a dump here?", if the answer is NO, you don't use the cell phone.
