Ascent Trip Report

Bill Jacobs TR of 2004 still applies, the purpose here is to update/add a few details. I went to the 2 Candidate High Point Areas listed in PB and not to Bill's 3rd Area, as he says " ....it not need be visited".

AREA 1 ..... .8 miles, 40 minutes RT.
From the junction of hwy 271/154 in Gilmer we traveled west on 154 for 1.1 miles to a left on FM49, then .87 miles to a left on the small Ash Road. We drove south on Ash Road 1.18 miles to the second sharp turn to the right (west) and parked in the small track on the left side (east) of this corner which heads east. This was my TH,
I used Bill's recommended " ...... an easier route would be to follow the pipeline-right-of-way ....."
From my TH I walked 25 yards east on the small track to the pipeline-right-of-way, turned right, crawled under the fence and followed the pipeline-right-of-way (160 degree compass) to a height-of-land (abt 440 yards) at an intersection with a wide gasline-right-of-way (clearly shown on the satellite map). The HP is northeast of this intersection.
Just before this intersection on the left is a woods track that I followed northeast for 75 yards to where it bends north. I stayed straight (northeast) and bushwacked moderately steep 200 yards to the obvious summit (open mixed woods, an easy bushwack). A track runs north on the ridge line.
I chose my spot amid thorny bushes GPS 32.71173, -94.98152.

AREA 2 ..... .5 miles, 20 minute RT.
We went back to the corner of Ash Road/FM49 and continued west on 49 for 4.5 miles to where 49 turns right, we stayed straight on FM1795 for 1.55 miles to a right (west) on Live Oak Trail (Latch Community Center on corner), at 1 mile we arrived at a driveway on left (south) that serves a private garage and the road to the summit (just past house #1015), We drove into the driveway to the gated summit road on the right, this was my TH.
I hopped the broken fence to one side of the gate and walked the road less than 400 yards to the large open grass summit ...... capped with a Fire Tower, 2 large trees and a Communication Tower with a shed. The high ground is south of the Fire Tower, I chose a spot at the center at GPS 32.69671, -95.08527.
