Ascent of Mount Major on 2012-02-20| Date: | Monday, February 20, 2012 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Mount Major | | Location: | USA-New Hampshire | | Elevation: | 1786 ft / 544 m |
Ascent Trip ReportI ascended from the Route 11 parking lot along the blue-blazed Mt. Major Trail, taking the ledges approach to the summit (there is also a ledges detour route). From there, I followed the Major-Straightback Link over to Straightback South, and added an out-and-back to Anna Mountain along the Anna-Straightback Link. Once back at Straightback South, I took the Quarry Trail to the main summit of Straightback, and then followed a green-blazed trail downhill and north to where I met up with the Brook Trail. The Brook Trail took me back to the Mt. Major Trail, which I followed back to my starting point on Route 11.
Many sections of trail were very icy, and microspikes or full crampons were almost essential. The hikers without traction aid couldn't have been having much fun, and plus it would have been dangerous. The ledges approach to Mt. Major was covered with thick ice, making for some dicey moments, even with microspikes.
Overall, it was a gorgeous day for a winter hike. The views of Lake Winnepesaukee are outstanding, and probably among the most impressive views in southern New Hampshire.
