Ascent of Jefferson County High Point on 2012-02-19

Climber: Jean André Laverdure

Date:Sunday, February 19, 2012
Ascent Type:Successful Summit Attained
Peak:Jefferson County High Point
    Location:USA-New York
    Elevation:1740 ft / 530 m

Ascent Trip Report

From Worth Center, I drove O'Conner Rd to its snowplow turnaround. Snowmobile trails along O'Conner and Wright Roads lead to within half-mile of highpoint. A swampy area along western slope to ridgeline had an easily crossed snow cover of cattails, thicket, and tree. The snow in the woods seems to have been relatively deep but had a solid frozen surface beneath the fresh powder. The wooded summit bump with an all around view betrays a shortest hunter's tree stand ever. Along O'Conner, I snowhoed five inches of fresh powder over a snow track in flurries and overall met no one at all but a group of four snowmobilers within the last mile who turned back a few hundred yards ahead from the hike's only road gate.
