Ascent Trip ReportThis is a very popular area with the locals since it is in a State Park. I approached from I-10, Exit 6 and headed east. In 3.4 miles I turned left into the Franklin Mountain State Park, at 4.1 miles I stopped and paid $4 at the booth, at 4.3 miles turned right towards Cottonwood Springs, and at 4.7 miles reached the end of the road and the trailhead. There is no outhouse at this popular trailhead, but there is one just below at the picnic area.
I hiked up the wide rocky trail into the cnayon and followed the main road all the way up to Mundy Gap. At Mundy Gap the road goes to the right and drops about 130 ft in elevation. When I got out to a point, with one road going down and the other up, I guessed that up was the right way. There was a sign there pointing towards North Franklin Mtn also. I just followed the road that is more of a trail now all the way to the summit. Fantastic views from the summit. I met some locals hiking down and they indicated the best way to climb is to go up the ridge directly from Mundy Gap. That way saves some mileage and is more fun.
