Ascent Trip Report

PB lists 2 Candidate High Point Areas a few hundred yards apart, both located north of Central High School, northwest of Lufkin on Hwy 69.

AREA 1
From the intersection of Hwy #7/69 northwest of Lufkin we drove south on 69 for 3.36 miles to a left on the unsigned Oquinn Road (this is a service road at the west end of Central High School), .12 miles to a right on AG Shop/Transportation Road that leads to maintenance shops and school bus parking area. This road is gated but open today so we were able to drive right to Area 1 located east of the school bus garage, baseball fields are to the south .... this area has seen a lot of construction, we chose the HP at GPS 31.43213, -94.81296.

AREA 2
From Oquinn Road (above) we drove south on 69 for .37 miles to a left on FM843 (the road just east of the High School, .12 miles north to a left on Wayne Nerren Drive, Entrance to the Central Junior High. At 100 yards parked the van, playground on the right, the school on the left, straight ahead is the road to the water tank.
I walked 50 yards straight to the gated fenced-in water tank, stayed right outside the fence perimeter 50 yards where I had to go through a very dense/thorny band of brush with 2 lines of fences. I stayed on the perimeter to the north side of the tank at 200 yards, then right along an old fence line 150 yards where I turned left, crawled under the fence, 50 yards to the obvious bump, my GPS 31.43393, -94.81219. This whole walk is on pasture land, the only animals in the fields today were at the very north end, a good distance from the HP.
I estimate the one way distance at .3 miles for a 30 minute RT.
