Ascent Trip ReportIt was good to get back out there after a long hiatus. This one was a doozy and was probably one of the more difficult bushwhacks I've done in a while. Make sure you bring some sturdy clothing and get ready to be scratched up.
I parked at the Young Harris trailhead for the Wagon Train Trail. I'm not sure if there's designated parking or not, so I just parked in a resident lot. The gate to the trail seems to be permanently closed to recreational traffic. I started to see why - the road is so rutted and washed out that you would need a really good 4x4 to even attempt it.
The trail is nice and wide and I made easy going to the 1.5 mi mark. My goal for this hike was to take the NW ridge all the way up to Double Knob and then connect over to Double Knob South. At this point I didn't want to come too far off the ridge, so I switchbacked up to the top of the ridge and started climbing. It wasn't too bad at this point, but there was a lot of little scrubby trees that made going slow. Occasionally I would hit patches of rhododendron that made the going slow. After a while the ridge inclines up sharply to the top of Double Knob.
After crossing over Double Knob I came to the summit of Double Knob South. It is a true peak and requires a good bit of difficult scrambling up rocks and through rhododendron to attain it. Once you get to the top there are one or two nice rock outcroppings where you have great views. At this point, I was tired of bushwhacking so I decided to just drop down the south side of the mountain to get to the trail. This probably wasn't the best idea since it is very steep and I had several instances where I was on my rear or either downclimbing. It was also extremely choked up with rhododendron.
Once I reached the trail I was happy, and the hike back to the car was easy and uneventful.
