Ascent Trip ReportA hop over a fence at 20 yards.
On the way here we wanted to take in Guadalupe Basin High Point on the north side of hwy 39. It his heavily fenced and not accessible. We continued east on 39 to 187.
From the intersection of hwy 39/187 we drove south on 187 for 3.2 miles to a height-of-land, parked on the right (west) side of the hwy, the BM is 20 yards west of the road side fence line. Higher ground in this area however is to the east.
All of the gated driveways on this stretch of the road are signed "Bonnie Hill W Ranch", so they seen to own everything on this part of the hwy. Their farm house is located a short distance down the road to the right.
When we arrived a truck was driving out of a driveway 100 yards down the road to the left (of course signed "Bonnie Hill W Ranch"). We drove there, " Good afternoon my name is Ben, I am looking for the person who could give me permission to go and visit the Guadalupe Benchmark."
I was in luck, the driver was the owner named W B Patterson.
"It's on that side of the road, follow me, I'll show you where it is."
We followed him to the spot noted above.
"It's by that stake.", pointing to the spot on the other side of the fence.
I asked him if he knew the date of the BM.
"No, I don't remember, but you can hop over the fence if you want."
As he pulled away he added, "If my son comes by in a red pickup, tell him I said it was OK."
I thanked Mr Patterson for his permission and understanding.
I hopped over the fence to the 4" high concrete base embedded with "US Coast & Geodetic Survey, Guadalupe 1944", my GPS read 29.91840, -99.58955.
From here we moved south to the Lost Maple State Park where we were able to get a campsite for the evening.
