Ascent Trip ReportI thought this one was a drive up, but the road has been gated about a mile before the summit. I approached Smith Pk from Agila and Hwy 60. Go north on Eagle Eye Drive and zero your odometer. At 2.1 the pavement ends, at 4.1 turn left at MP 31, at 7.2 turn right on a good gravel road. There is a stake in the ground at the corner that is marked Smith Peak and an arrow pointing up this road. At 10.0 miles pass an information kiosk on your right for the Smith Peak Road Area, at 11.8 go through a wash and pass an old rock foundation on your left, and at 12.5 miles there is a sigh that says there is a locked gate 5.5 miles ahead and to use 4WD to protect your tires and the road. The road then gains elevation quickly. The road is good and wide, but 4WD helps get around the switchbacks without spinning your tires. At 18.0 miles reach the gate at about 4,700 ft. Park in the wide spot and hike the road. Hike past the first hill with towers and on to the second one. The high point and register are behind the last building. Good views.
