Ascent Trip ReportWe overnighted at Del Rio last night where we had a super steak buffet (a first) at Sirloin Stockhouse Restaurant for 9$ followed by a movie at 3.25 each .... how can you beat that. This morning we resuplied our groceries before heading off to Rocksprings and the Edwards CoHP which has 5 Candidate High Point Areas. From the junction 377/55 (at the Shell Station) we drove south on 55 to Area 1 & 2 before going northeast on 377 to Areas 3, 4 & 5.
AREA 1 .... open grazing land, .6 miles, 20 minute RT We drove south on 55 for 2.1 miles to a gated driveway on the right (west) at a fence line. A farmer was with a trailer of hay was just closing the gate behind him. I told him the HP was at 200 yards at the crest of the road ahead. "Yes, just make sure you close the gate on your way out." I didn't tell him that the high ground is actually to the left over the fence. Once on the crest of the road with the farmer out of sight, I hopped over the fence and walked/circled south in the open area with some brush about 300 yards before choosing 2 spots ...... GPS 29.98737, -100.19278 at 50 yards south of the fence and GPS29.98690, -100.19234 at another 75 yards south.
AREA 2 ..... open grazing land, .6 miles, 20 minutes RT. From Area 1 we went back up the road .6 miles to a sharp right on CR300, 1.37 miles to a gate on the left, we parked here. I squeezed through the gate walked 100 yards up the road, turned left in the grazing land (treed with lot of open areas) and chose my spot at 150 yards, inside a small patch of trees/brush. GPS 29.99751, -100.17622. Its best to walk the large area touching the different bumps to be sure. We drove back to Rocksprings.
AREA 3 .... 200 yards, 10 minutes RT From the intersection in Rocksprings we drove north on 377 for 1.3 miles and parked at a fence-in grazing land with a pipe line right-of-way on the left. I crawled through the broken fence and walked the flat area to my spot at GPS 30.03160, -100.19613, 75 yards from the road.
AREA 5 ..... open grazing land with woods, .6 miles, 25 minutes RT from TH. From Area 3 parking we continued .6 miles north on 377 to the bend on the road, CR 2630 on the left and a private gated driveway on the right leading to open grazing land. The gate was open, no animals in sight except for sheep in another field to the east. I walked the dirt track then cross country, southeast for Area 5. At 400 yards I came to a north-south fence/pipe line, I easily crawled through the fence to the east side (this fence can be electrified), stomped the area the best I could, nothing obvious here.
AREA 4 ..... open grazing land, .6 miles, 25 minute RT from Area 5. From Area 5 I went back to the west side of the pipe line and walked south, straight ahead at about 500 yards the high ground can be seen. Once there I hopped over a gate and walked the high ground, choosing a spot at 75 yards south of the gate, GPS 30.03250, -100.18950.
I should note that there are no Posted signs in these areas. We moved on to Colorado-Nueces-Guadalupe Triple Divide Point.
