Ascent Trip Report

Edgar is a surprisingly tough climb. Mitchell Caverns has bee closed because of budget issues and the access road is blocked and gated about 2 miles below the caverns. I took Exit 100 from I-40 (Essex Road) and followed the road to the gate about 14 miles north of I-40.

I parked near the gate and hiked up the road. At the first service building, I left the road and turned north to the next canyon. This is the DPS route. I hiked up the canyon through lots of cactus. There is no was to avoid getting a cactus bite somewher on this hike. Thankfully, the one time I fell down, I didn't land in the middle of a big prickly pear. There is no trail on this one, so my waypoints to select the correct canyon were helpful. I uploaded a GPS track of my route. I did find a small faint climbers trail about 300 ft below the saddle on the south ridge of Edgar. This was helpful. There are places along the ridge where there is a climbers trail also, but also places where it disappers. The ridge route is time consuming and there is some scrambling, but it is not technical. Great views from the summit. I was slow today and it took me 9.25 hours car to car.
