Ascent Trip Report

Beautiful clear January day. Hit the trail from Appalachia with Cullen at about 9:30AM. It was a quick and relatively easy hike up to the treeline via the Airline trail. I was on snowshoes most of the way, but the snow was not only 4-5" deep with knee deep drifts in places. At the treeline I switched over to microspikes for the remainder of the hike, up and down. Soon after reaching the treeline we encountered a group on their way down who told us there was some weather rolling in so we better get off of the summit cone quickly. We continued up as there was no evidence of any weather. The snow here was windblown ice and patchy snow drifts. The hiking up the summit cone became more and more difficult and I struggled to summit, the last half mile was the most difficult I have done. The views of Mount Washington and Wildcat from the summit were excellent. We came back down and cut across to the Madison Hut. I sat down and had some lunch and enjoyed the weather, while Cullen summited Madison. Half an hour later we were back on the trail and decended quickly via Valley way. Valley way had much more powdery snow that was a few inches deeper than that we had encountered on Airline. We finished up at about 330. Excellent trail m aintenance
