Ascent Trip ReportI am entering this TR primarily to warn future highpointers of the access problems associated with Mount Smith, as is the case with numerous Texas CoHP ... everything seems to be fenced-in/gated. I checked out approaches from the east and south, in both cases I was stopped by locked gates.
My study told me that easiest/ideal route was from the east. From I45, exit 551 we traveled west on Bourne Stage Road 3.1 miles to a 4-way intersection where we stayed straight on Toutant-Beauregard Road 4.3 miles to a left on Karsch Road (private road), .8 miles right on Crow Ranch Road (dirt), .56 miles after a bend left come to a locked gate, signed "Keep Locked" & #12625. I read this as leading to a house, I thought of climbing over the gate and making the easy road walk (about 2+ miles) to the summit, instead I decided to check out the south side.
We drove south to Hwy #16 then west to Haby Lane which the maps showed that it would take us near the HP, again we were turned back by a gate at less than a mile.
I decided to leave it for another visit.
