Ascent Trip ReportFrom the town of Pine Mountain Club drive west on the Mil Potrero Highway for 2.9 miles to Apache Saddle. This junction is also 21.5 miles south from highway 166. At this junction turn left onto Cerro Noroeste Road and proceed on the good paved road up the mountain. At 6.8 miles note a sign on the right for the Mt. Pinos Trail. Pull off here and park. There is limited space for maybe one car one each side of the road. UTM here is: 298710E, 3856050N. Hike the Mt. Pinos Trail, number 21W03, which heads steeply downhill to a saddle called Puerta Del Suelo with a sign at a trail junction. Continue southeast on the Mt. Pinos Trail heading up the slopes. As the trail levels out at about 8480 feet leave the trail and head south through the forest up the moderate slopes for about 1/3 of a mile. The register is south of the 8582 foot spot elevation in a rock pile on a knoll that is about the same height. This route is 3.6 miles round-trip with a gain of about 1000 feet from the saddle to the summit. On the return there is a gain of about 500 feet back to the road. Allow about 1 1/2 hours to the peak and one hour to return. 5/01 RLC
