Ascent Trip ReportSection 13 is shown as private land on the Sequoia National Forest map. The normal hiking route starts on the west side on National Forest road 29S04. There are no signs restricting access or that indicate that the summit is on private land.
The mountain can be reached by way of the Kelso Valley Road which is a good paved road heading south from highway 178 a few miles east of Lake Isabella. After about 17.2 miles turn right (west) on the dirt Piute Mountain Road which will then climb steeply via a series of switchbacks. At a distance of 7.4 miles turn left (south) on forest road 29S04. On 29S04 go for 4.1 miles which will bring you alongside the slopes of Sorrell. The climb up the steep pine needle covered slope takes only about 20 minutes. This section of the PCT was rerouted from its path in Jawbone Canyon so it is not in the book "The Pacific Crest Trail", Vol. 1, 4th ed., by Schaffer, Schifrin, Winnett, and Jenkins.
