Ascent Trip ReportTo reach Black Mesa drive about 8 miles east of Quartzsite on Interstate 10 and exit at Gold Nugget Road. Go south and then follow the road as it turns left (east) paralleling the Interstate. At 0.4 miles go straight at a fork and then continue close to a mountain on your right which has a radio site on top. At 2.4 miles turn right (south) onto a dirt road. A 4WD vehicle is advised from here on as this road is rough and sandy in places. Reset your odometer and at 2.8 miles stay right at a fork and at 3.4 miles stay in the wash at another fork as the road winds through a mining area. At 5.6 miles go right at another fork and then park at a flat spot on the right at about 6.8 miles. This is a good place to start the hike, however if you don't mind a steep 4WD hill you can continue on to a better campsite over the hill at 7.2 miles. From either site hike up the road to the top of the hill where an old mining road heads east up towards the mesa. This point is at UTM 746198. Follow this road to its end and then up a steep slope with lava boulders and plenty of cholla to the top edge of the mesa. Continue about another mile NE gradually gaining elevation to a cairn at the high point. Round-trip distance is 3.5 miles with an elevation gain of close to 1100 ft. Allow 1 1/4 hours for the ascent and 1 hour to return. 2/95 RLC
