Ascent Trip ReportThis is the famous "rock" jutting out towards Death Valley from Zabrinski Point. We thought it was rock but is really a big pile of hard-packed clay. Not recommended for climbing. To get there, take the trail down from Zabrinski Point about 1 mile or so to the trail junction of the Golden and Goler Gulch trails. Turn right towards the peak and follow the trail immediately passed one wash on the right to a second wash on the right. This second wash is only 100 or so feet from the trail junction. Leave the trail and follow the second wash as it winds around under and passed Manly Beacon. Then take the left branch at a junction where the wash considerably narrows. If you hit it right, this wash will lead under 3 use trails following ridges up towards the main ridge just north of Manly Beacon. The first use trail up looks downright dangerous. The second use trail looks easier though very steep. Our walking poles actually came in handy as they really stuck the clay. But I almost would recommend ice ax and crampons for this clay climb. Anyway, once on the ridge we walked the knife edge to the base of Manly Beacon and carefully climbed the clay. The steepest part had big rocks embedded in the clay which kept the climb to high class 3. Nice view from a summit that doesn't see many visitors. I don't plan on adding this peak to a list of "50 Finest Climbs of Death Valley", nor would I want to climb it again.
