Ascent Trip Report

This was a fun trip with my friends John and Karrie and Shane. John and Karrie had never climbed a mountain before and so it was fun to introduce them to it. We drove down from Eugene, arriving in the early afternoon, and after establishing our tent site, we headed to Bumpass Hell, the really cool geothermal area at the base of the mountain, it's like a little Yellowstone. We also did some other hikes, though I can't remember exactly what, but it was a laid-back trip with some good friends and I really enjoyed the whole thing. We got up early the next day and drove to the parking lot to start our climb, but first we had to get over a case of jitters from Karrie, who was feeling overwhelmed by the mountains sheer size. But after a little gentle coaxing, we were on our way. The trail is only a couple of switchbacking, well-graded miles to the top, and we made really good time, passing hundreds of grade-school kids who were on a mountain-climbing field trip. We arrived at the craggy top after only an hour and a half, and spent time exploring the maze-like crater of youthful lava. I tried to find the alleged steam vents, but could find none. So we took our mandatory pictures and headed back down, happy and satisfied with our trip. Unfortunately, it was the only trip we ever made together, but I will cherish the memories of it forever.
