Ascent Trip ReportShort sand dune climbs off of Hwy 12 to 6 different areas.
We left the Hotel on Hwy 12 south, in time to catch the free 8 AM Hatteras/Ocracoke Ferry. The skies were partly overcast with some sun and a lot of wind, it would turn out to be a super warm sunny day with little wind, ideal for today's short dune walking. We were asked to provide a driver's license. Only 4 cars got on the Ferry, we sat in the car for the 45 minute crossing.
Peakbagger lists 6 candidate High Point Areas for Hyde County, all off of Ocracoke Island's Hwy 12, I have numbered them in the same order (east to west) as Denis Dean's RT of 2006. In between these 6 Areas we also visited the other 4 Ocracoke Island Peaks listed in the PB library. Hwy 12 has Mile Markers (MM).
AREA 1 (spot elevation 27, Green Island).
A scrubby dune at MM 76.7 on the south side of the road. I walked the ridge 200 yards before eye-leveling/choosing my spot at GPS 35.16285, -75.83210.
AREA 2 (Sand C Benchmark, Green Island).
PB puts it on the north side of the road but its definitely on the south side of the road at MM 77.3, my chosen spot was at GPS 35.15884, -75.84280. From this Area we went to Scrag Cedars and The Knoll before going to Area 3.
AREA 3 & 4 (PB's area 3 & 1, Howard Reef).
Both are on the north side of the road, just past Parker's Creek, my TH was at MM 80.1, 50 yards ahead on the right is a Witness Survey Post. This area has some nasty thorny vegetation so I didn't repeat a Dean, I wore boots and long pants.
For AREA 3 I chose my spot at GPS 35.14289, -75.88818, at 60 yards from the road.
For AREA 4 I made my way west about 200 yards from 3 to an obvious bump full of dense low shrubs, choosing my spot at GPS 35.14303, -75.88982.
From these Areas we went to Knoll Cedars and Parker's Hill before going on to Area 5.
AREA 5 (Near Spot Elevation 14, Howard Reef)
In a beautiful tall pine forest on south side of the road at MM 81.7 at 4 orange colored guard posts for a Fiber Optic Cable. This was my TH.
I stomped inside the fairly dense forest on a soft pine needle forest floor, going-over/eye-leveling a number of bumps before settling on a bump located at GPS 35.13192, -75.91280, 50 yards south of the road and 50 yards before (east) the Fiber Optic Cable. This to me is the nicest area of all the candidates.
AREA 6 (Hammock Oaks, spot 26, Howard Reef).
In the woods north of the paved parking on the north side of the road , MM 82.5, Ocracoke Campground.
From the parking area I walked west to the trailer dump/wash area then generally north winding my way through the woods on open sand paths. I checked/eye-leveled a few bumps before settling on an obvious bump at about 250 yards from the TH, GPS 35.12754, -75.92427 (the PB coordinates puts the spot to the southwest).
A very enjoyable day, from here we drove north to Kitty Hawk with enough time to visit the Wright Brothers Memorial Museum.
