Ascent Trip Report

Today was a "NO ACCESS" Highpoint.

From Virginia Beach we drove east on I264 to the Atlantic Coast, then north on Atlantic Avenue to the stop light at its very north end (left is hwy 60) where I turned right on Atlantic Avenue a short distance to Fort Story Gate 8 Entrance.
What follows is a perfect example of how our movements have changed in America. In February 2001 Michael Schwartz reported "The gates are usually not manned, but ........". Today the gate is manned with 2 guards who asked for driver/registration license, to get out of the car and open all doors including hood and trunk. After a full inspection you are provided with a Historic Site Access Pass with instructions "You are authorized to visit First landing and The Lighthouse and no other part of the installation, drive only on the main road to the Lighthouse". I followed orders.

I asked if it was possible to get a special pass to visit the highpoint, they referred me to the office beside the gate where the gentleman on duty didn't know .... it was the first time he was asked this question .... he told me to call Major Brady at 757-462-1825.
I didn't think that I would get walk-up permission so I left it for another day.

After visiting the Lighthouse we moved-on to Jockeys Ridge, North Carolina.

ADDENDUM 1 DATED 2015-01-02
We are on "Winter Trip 2015", heading south down the Atlantic Coast, tried to access this HP for the 2nd time with no results.
Prior to coming down I corresponded with a number of people finally being directed to the right person, Scott Mohr (contact info follows). His last correspondence to me read, ".... Reviewed this request with my leadership and since this location is within our training areas on base, we will not be able to support. The JEB Fort Story is prime training grounds for our military forces. I wasn't quite sure of the location you were talking about until I reviewed the web site you sent. Sorry we cannot make this work. ....."
I was disappointed to say the least, isn't the military there to help those in need .... they don't train everyday.
I will try again in the future if-and-when I should be passsing-by. I have found in life that special requests are fulfilled by people that will go that extra mile ..... the easiest thing to do is to say "no".
