Ascent of South Mountain on 2012-01-08| Date: | Sunday, January 8, 2012 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | South Mountain | | Location: | USA-North Carolina | | Elevation: | 2090 ft / 637 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThis one was confusing - game land maps showed some parking areas that might have offered an approach, but they didn't appear where the map stated. I parked just on the McDowell county side of the McDowell/Rutherford border. There was a parking area with a locked gate, which I thought might have been the entrance to the game lands, but it appears it is an abandoned housing development - as I later saw trees with boundary markers. The bushwhack to the summit was completely miserable with brush and thorns. The Rutherford side of the ridge had been clear cut near the summit, which provided nice views if the ugly landscape of broken stumps in the foreground could be ignored.
