Ascent Trip ReportMy son, Marshall, and I had just finished climbing the 13 highest named summits in Mississippi and we were on our way home to Missouri. We had hoped to pick up a few highpoints in southern Illinois on the way home, but we were behind schedule and the sun had already set. We were still optimistic that we could pickup, at least, one highpoint in the dark, however, so we made the drive up Bald Knob. What a great surprise to find such an amazing structure on the summit. The gigantic cross we found was very unexpected. In addition, the lights of cities in the distance gave evidence that a daytime visit would offer a great summit vista. As a bonus, just as we were in the car and getting ready to leave, the caretaker drove up and allowed us to tour his summit museum, even though it was after hours. This highpoint is a jewel and it was hard to believe that there was no charge. Both my son and I agreed that a daytime return visit is a must.
