Ascent Trip ReportI approached Ward Benchmark from Sardine Creek. Sardine Creek is west of the town of Gold Hill a couple miles. It is signed and is the road you take to get to the famous House of Mystery. Cross the railroad tracks and go 2.6 miles up Sardine Creek and park along the road. There is private property nearby, but BLM property is alongside the road at this point on the west side.
I hiked up the steep hill, found the east ridge and followed it all the way to the summit. This route is a total bushwhack. Not fun at all. It appears like about 20 years ago there was some brushing done along the ridge. They just left all the brush where it was cut. On top of the east ridge there is kind of a brushy game trail left from the brushing. I lost the trail many times, but kept coming back up to the top of the ridge where I would soon find the trail again. The last part between point 2657 and the summit is very brushy, but the south side is a steep grassy slope. Don't use the grassy slope because it ends at a worse bushwhack before getting to the summit. There are some views while hiking, but this is pretty much just a miserable bushwhack with poison oak thrown in.
