Ascent Trip Report

Began this hike at the Big Hollow Road Parking area. Hiked up the Batavia Kill trail to a left on the Escarpment Trail to the summit of Blackhead. Most of the trail was walkable without microspikes until I reached the 3500ft sign where the ice became non-negotiable. This side of the mountain had more snow than lower levels where there was only a light dusting. reaching the summit was uneventful. I took a snack and began the descent toward Black Dome where a fine lookout presented good shots of the Devils Path range from Hunter all the way to Plattekill Mountain. Snow showers and flurries started as I descended and decided to do Black Dome at 0.6mi from the intersection, no one had been up this trail today as there were no fresh marks in the snow. Starting the hike at 1215 it was now 230pm. I made it to the summit with more great views of the devils path range and began my descent at 3pm. Reached the intersection at 315pm and descended back to the parking lot via the Black dome range trail which met back up with the Batavia Kill trail. Reached the car at 405pm. 2 or 3 New foot bridges appear to have been replaced since Irene. Gave a ride to a hiker who had done the Windham loop but had parked on Peck road 3mi away. Would not want to do that walk again. This was my first of the 4 winter required peaks. 4 parties signed in at the register, saw none all day.
