Ascent Trip Report

Did a father-son hike up Piper Mountain today (12/29/2011). There wasn't a cloud in the sky, but it was cold as heck and windy, especially on the summit ridge.

The Piper Mountain Trail starts off the access road for Belknap Mountain about 0.1 miles past the gate. It immediately crossed a stream, which my Dad and I had a little trouble crossing. After that, it went steeply uphill and then eased up.

The hike up wasn't too exciting other than a few views from the trail and through the trees. There was no snow, but there was a lot of ice. I had microspikes in my backpack, but it was so cold that I didn't want to put them on.

Eventually, after some large patches of ice, we reached an bare, open patch, which was the summit. We explored for a few minutes and then found a place to eat and drink. I brought a scrambled eggs and bacon meal that you had to add hot water to to heat up, and it tasted so good after hiking all that way.

After about ten or so more minutes, we went back down the mountain to my truck.
