Ascent Trip ReportThis would be an easy summertime hike, but with deep snow and a near zero windchill it was harder today. I took NM 378 to the Rio Grande recreation area. The road (left turn) to the trailhead is well marked. Because of snow drifts I decided to park a half mile short of the trailhead adding a mile to the roundtrip. Part of my motivation for this hike was to test snowshoes I bought a couple of days ago. I've never used them before. Took me a while to figure it out. The rhythm is different than walking, and the bindings kept coming loose. I didn't figure out how to manage the bindings properly until I headed down. A well maintained trail with great views of the volcanoes on the Taos Plateau.
