Ascent Trip Report

I parked in the small trailhead lot on Route 171 near Sodom Road, and hiked the Mt. Shaw-Black Snout-Tate Mountain loop, using the Mt. Shaw Trail, Black Snout Trail, Banana Trail, and Tate Mountain Trails. It was pretty straightforward, except I almost missed the northern end of the Banana Trail near the summit of Black Snout. I had gotten accustomed to the wide trails, and so I didn't notice the single track Banana Trail when I first passed by it.

It was a cold December day, and the temperature was in the upper teens when I started. But it was sunny with perfect blue skies all day and little wind. I enjoyed the great view north from Shaw toward the White Mountains, and the view south from Black Snout. While Tate Mountain is the lowest of the three, there is a clear view in all directions.

There was a light dusting of snow, with just a little ice here and there. I brought microspikes, but didn't need them. I saw just two other hikers the entire time: a solo middle-aged man descending from Shaw, and a solo woman at the summit of Shaw.
