Ascent Trip Report

Maury and Giles county’s highpoints, while not true two-fers, are very near to each other and the county line weaves between them.
Maury county has 4 areas above 1,160 feet, including one area at a fire tower near Flanigan Hill. The other three contours extend into Giles county as well.
The two eastern points are located on Parish Hollow Rd; this road seems to nearly follow the county line. Maury county is north of the road. These points are unremarkable and seemed uninhibited; I did not run into any of the problems Andy Martin seems to have had.
The western point is also shared with Giles county and is behind a farmhouse on the west side of Morrow Branch/Miller Lake Rd. I knocked and front door and the homeowner came out from the back. We chatted for a bit and he did know about his property’s high point status but said no one had ever come to ask his permission to visit it. Permission was granted and his dog accompanied me into the fallow field. This area is clear but there is not much of a view. The other points are visible to the east and by observation appear to be higher.
The last point is located north of the other three at a fire tower. The small road approaching it appears private but the gate was open. I drove up and began to take pictures, which seemed to upset a dog at the nearby house. The owner came outside to ask if I was lost; I replied that I was exactly where I intended to be. She too was aware of the property’s highpoint status and did recall a few visitors in years past. She said the tower could be climbed but I was in a hurry to finish my trip so I skipped the climb. From observation, I would say this point is higher than the one behind the farmhouse but not sure about the eastern points.
Maury county’s high points may be reached by taking Andrew Jackson Highway (US-43/TN-6) north out of Lawrenceburg and driving 9.4 miles. Turn right onto Marcella Rd/Factory Creek Rd. Turn left (north) onto TN-166 and go 5.1 miles to Screamer Rd and turn right. Screamer Rd merges with Morrow Branch/Miller Lake Rd. The highpoints are about 2.5 miles away from the intersection with TN-166.
Alternatively, one may travel south out of Columbia on TN-245 and make their way to Miller Creek Rd. Lastly, it may also be reached by taking exit 27 or 32 off of I-65 and heading west on country roads.
