Ascent Trip Report

Started at the parking area on rt.73 off cascade pass. The temps were in the single digits and there was about 3 inches of fresh powder from snow showers overnight. Throughout the hike there was either forest snow or light snow showers. The temps remained cold all day and probably only warmed to the mud teens at best. I hiked slow at first and had a hard time warming up. Getting used to my new microspikes took about a minute. They cut through the packed base and ice with ease, why did I ever hike without them? I summited Cascade first, it was a nice summit, clear of trees, not too icy but the spikes were necessary. Many folks out today were without the spikes and their troubles were obvious. I started to catch a chill so I bailed back to the treeline where I picked up the trail to Porter. Hiked out and walked to the far side of the peak and started to descend a bit when I realized I should turn back, I was going to also go over to little porter but decided against it due to time. I headed back to the main trail back to the car to discover the whole trail had become considerably more packed down to the point of ice. I passed many folks struggling to get down safely, even one girl wearing sneakers. Ironically, I was was passed in the morning by a trail runner who somehow ran both mountains then went back up cascade, he ran into me near the lot where I asked him about it. He said he also had run Marcy, though not in these conditions. Pretty impressive. Overall a good solid hike. Great views from Cascade and fun conditions.
