Ascent Trip ReportI parked at the old ski area across from Miller State Park on Route 101, and hiked out-and-back along the Wapack Trail over Temple Mountain and turned around at Burton Peak.
This hike has been on my to-do list for some time now. This cool, crisp late fall day seemed like a good time for it. This was my first hike of the season in quasi-winter-like conditions, and I thought I'd pick something that wasn't too strenuous.
As the Wapack Trail ascends Temple Mountain from Route 101, it follows an access road, and that stretch was icy in spots (not to mention somewhat dull in general). I came close to breaking out the microspikes, but the going became much easier once the trail branched off into the woods and became single track. There was an inch or two of snow cover, but the trail was tromped down pretty well, and I was mostly walking on bare ground. The microspikes would have come off had I been using them.
I enjoyed nice views of Mt. Monadnock, Pack Monadnock and other scenery at various points. I also stopped to check out some of the well-constructed cairns, including the stone chair.
