Ascent Trip Report

I parked off of Ponemah Hill Rd. about 30 feet from the entrance to the road leading to Federal Hill's summit.

I walked up the road to the summit. The hike up was quite short and easy. It ascended the hill at an easy to moderate grade through woods, with limited views behind me. I saw a van go down the road about a few hundred feet before the summit, which was the first time I saw a vehicle on a hill/mountain tower access road. Eventually, I got to the summit.

Federal Hill's summit has a few buildings on it, and it has a large fire tower. I looked around the summit for a few minutes and then walked toward the fire tower.

As I approached the tower, a gentleman emerged from the woods. We walked up the tower, and he told me a little about the hill and its history.

There were good views in all directions from the top of the tower. Notable points of interests were the Uncanoonucs, the Pack Monadnocks, and Temple Mountain. I hung out on the tower for a few minutes and then went back to ground level to go back to my truck.

The gentleman I saw earlier told me about some trails that went back to Ponemah Hill Rd, which I took down the hill. Like the road, the trails were short. There were minor rocky parts, but they weren't really a problem. Eventually, I came out to an intersection. I turned left back to the beginning of the access road, walked back to my truck, and went home.
