Ascent Trip ReportAs far as I can determine, Benton Mound is the 2nd highest named summit point in Illinois. My son, Marshall, and I were disappointed to find two "No trespassing" signs located on the south side of the mound where we wanted to climb. I inquired at a house nearby if it was possible to get permission to climb. A friendly lady told me the owner of the land lived about 4 miles away and he would probably grant us permission, but he rents the land to a man who is always chasing people away. This seemed to be a real dilemma until the lady said we could simply park in her driveway and climb the mound from there. We were very glad for this opportunity, instead of driving around for an hour trying to locate an individual who might deny us access. It was about a .3 mile climb to the summit across pasture, crop land and finally through a forest with wide trails. It seemed several trails converged on the highest spot. There were no views in any direction due to the trees, but we were happy to have bagged this high point. There is another closed contour line to the southwest having the same elevation as the NE summit contour line, but it is a much smaller area and appeared to be lower. We were satisfied we reached the highest point on Benton Mound.
