Ascent Trip ReportAs far as I can determine, Scales Mound is the 4th highest named summit point in Illinois. The mound is on private property, so my son, Marshall, and I tried to find the landowner to get permission for the climb because the mound's base is surrounded with houses. A nice lady at the first house we stopped at on the west side of the mound allowed us to park our car in her driveway and climb from there through a metal gate SE of her house. It was a short climb of less than .25 mile to a nondistinct summit in a pasture on the NE part of the mound. There were nice views from there to the west and south, but the most interesting aspect of Scales Mound are the huge, dark bedrock slabs that circle the southern part of the mound. Next to Charles Mound, the highest point in Illinois, Scales Mound was our favorite Illinois highpoint.
