Ascent Trip Report

This must be one of the most interesting mountain hikes in New York, because you get to see so much on one peak: a great view of the Hudson River and Ashokan Reservoir, a historic 65-ft fire tower, and the impressive ruins of a 100+ year old hotel, the Overlook Mountain House. One can easily spend several hours touring all the sites.

The trail is 2.5 miles long one way and entirely a dirt road to the top, as this provided access to the hotel (via horse and carriage) and the fire tower. Though made for wheeled transport, the grade is quite impressive and makes for a fine cardio and muscle workout! Took us about 45 minutes to summit, and easily spent 90 minutes taking in all the sites. The weather was perfect.

I first hiked Overlook in the summer, and decided to do so again later in the year when the lack of vegetation would make it even easier to see and photograph the ruins. I highly recommend this trip, regardless of your experience or skill level- you won't be disappointed!
