Ascent Trip ReportThis was the culmination of an 11.6-mile hike to climb the 3 SB6K peaks in the Roan Highlands. The other 2 are covered in my trip report for Roan High Bluff.
From Carvers Gap, head northbound on the AT.
At 0.6 miles, cross Round Bald (5826).
At 1.0 miles, cross Engine Gap (5600).
At 1.3 miles, after a brisk climb, reach Jane Bald (5807).
At 1.7 miles, the double-blazed AT turns L and begins to descend. Continue straight ahead on the rutted trail that follows the ridgeline.
At 2.3 miles, reach a 6-foot-high boulder with a monument to Cornelius Rex Peake, who farmed this mountain. A hundred yards ahead are more outcroppings that may be candidates for the HP.
Just beyond Jane Bald is a mailbox with information about the Baatany Goat Project. Since 2008, a herd of goats has spent summers on this mountain, where their foraging helps to control invasive plants that threaten the balds. On the SB6K list, this was my fourth peak in 2 days and my 14th qualifying hike. Still on my to-do list are the Smokies (except for LeConte), the Balsams west of NC215, Cold Mtn, and the Black Mountain traverse. If you're interested in a slow hike there, let me know.
