Ascent Trip Report

Rapid expansion of gas drilling in North Central Pennsylvania changes access for this high point (and others). The access road others have noted is now not only posted against unauthorized motorized traffic but also prohibits parking at the entrance to the road. I parked 0.2 mi. north at a Pa. Game Commission access. These prohibitions are rigidly enforced by a guard posted a few yards from the highway. Walking up is still OK. I essentially circled the mountain on the winding (and up and down) roads. I tried to steer clear of the most intense activity, east and north of the highpoint which features a steady stream of heavy trucks and an industrial site that looks like a small refinery. I took a road that skirts south of the hp and then around the back. My first effort to bushwhack up the hill was turned back by dense thorns and underbrush. I found a steep but unproblematic path up the backside (eg west side). Coming down I bushwhacked to the site of heavy activity (guided by the noise) and then dodged the trucks on the way down. Overall this route involved a walk of nearly 8 miles through a no longer tranquil forest.
