Ascent of Bald Knob on 2011-11-12
|Date:||Saturday, November 12, 2011|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||4361 ft / 1329 m|
Ascent Trip ReportComing from the west on US460, I took Road 613 up to the Mountain Lake resort. If you're coming from Blacksburg and the east, take Road 700. Turn R at the hotel registration entrance and proceed to the parking lot. Walk back the way you drove in, passing the Mountain Lake Conservancy office and the gift shop on your R, and you'll see the sign for the Bald Knob trailhead on the L. Follow this trail for a short distance until it intersects the road that leads to the top. The road is closed to vehicles.
The HP is obvious. The BM is about 20 yards to the R. I found the RM on the cliff (overlooking an interesting chimney-rock formation) and it pointed to a higher rock in a briar patch. I waded in there but didn't find the BM.
Round trip hike of 1.7 miles.
The trailhead for the Craig County HP is only a few miles from Mountain Lake, but it was too late in the day for me to tackle that 6-mile hike.
