Ascent Trip ReportThis was my 50th birthday trip. Wanted to go somewhere close to FL and see some fall color but a nice workout on the legs. Last hike of the day. Karen stayed at the camp and set up the tent. We had already completed Sassafras Mtn and Hickorynut and thus, had over 9 miles in and nearly 2,000 feet of vertical gain. Wanted another nice workout before calling it quits so raced up this popular trail passing everyone. I made the first 2.1 miles in 50 minutes and gained most of the vertical. I summited in 1 hour and 20 minutes - pretty fast for tired legs at the end of a day. Took time to enjoy the slab a while. Started for the second slab when I realized I needed to get down before dark and help at the camp.
Raced back up the summit and down in a total of only 2 hours and 40 minutes. The sign says allow for 4.5 to 5.5 hours. I was happy with my fitness for late in the season. It was 47F when I got back. On way down i met a woman from my hometown and went to our local HS and new the teachers Karen works with. Then at dinner an hour later our waiter turned out to be from our home town too and his mom and dad lived across the street from us! His favorite teacher was Karen's hallmate. Considering we were 9 hours from home by car and only talked to 4 people all day - to have two of them from our local HS and one having lived accross the street from us was pretty freaky. The woman was on the trail with me and the waiter was an hour away in Greenville. We took his business cards back with us to give to his mother near us and his favorite teacher.
Total day was over 4,000 feet of vertical and 16 miles of hiking. Nice training day.
