Ascent Trip ReportFrom US 250, 1.5 miles SE of the WV/VA line, take VA 601 south. The sign at the junction says the road ends after 1.06 miles, but it actually runs 1.6 miles to the end of state maintenance at a gate.
Pass just east of Bear Mountain at 1.1 miles, then reach the gate at 1.6 miles, "guarded" by three derelict trailers. The gate was not posted, bearing only a homemade sign for "AMS," the identity of which I have been unable to determine. Since it was not locked, I opened it and drove through, being careful to close it behind me. Another 0.6 miles brings one slightly past the triple divide point off to the left, but at a point where a split rail fence offers easy access to the field. The desired point is 370 feet into the field, and from there one can clearly see how the ridges delineate the three watersheds. The road may be drivable to Watering Pond Knob, less than a mile distant, but dwindling daylight ended my explorations for the day.
