Ascent Trip ReportFrom IL-146, 1.2 miles W of the junction with IL-127 or 4.1 miles W of the junction with IL-3, I turned S on Berryville Rd. A historical marker lies immediately W of the turnoff. Call this point mile 0.0. Just 0.1 mile later, the road jogs R between a house, a corrugated metal shack, and a mobile home. At 0.5 mile, the road begins to traverse along the edge of a floodplain with fields. At 0.7 mile, I passed a white house on the R side of the road. At 1.2 miles, I turned R onto Water Plant Rd. At 1.8 miles, the pavement ended as I crossed a creek on a concrete slab. There are seveal large corrugated metal buildings on the L. At 1.3 miles, the main road curves L and climbs uphill into a forest. Going straight ahead would enter a gate (open at the time). At 2.2 miles, I turned L at a junction. Immediately after the turn, a sign identifies the Shawnee NF. At 2.6 miles, the road began to climb a steep hill. A vehicle without a low range gear would need some speed to get up it. At 3.1 miles, I parked at a turnaround loop at the summit. Get out and walk around until satisfied you've stood on the highest ground. There is considerable poison ivy at the edge of the surrounding woods.
