Ascent Trip Report

I used Dennis Poulin's drive route for the start of this climb. Based on comments by other climbers, this appears to be the easiest route on the peak...at least better than the N route from Foshay Pass and the SW approach from Pine Tree Ranch. And I agree, this was a nice way to climb the peak. Many thanks to Dennis for finding this TH and describing a fine peak climb. The cacti density was not a big problem when compared to climbing nearby Edgar Peak and Mitchell Point. Those two peaks had some of the densest concentration of pointy, pokey plants of any desert peak I've done so far. However, I appear to have taken a somewhat different route than Dennis did. I followed the old railroad grade (really just a trail now) briefly as it crossed a deep wash. Then I followed the east ridge all the way to the summit.

There are just a few revisions and comments to Dennis' route:
1) Drive 8 miles north (not south) from the Essex Rd intersection with I-40.
2) Go straight at a 4-way intersection at 2.6 miles (not 1.6 miles...there is no junction at 1.6 miles from when the odometer is zeroed)
3)Just after the passing the first corral, stay to the right at a road junction.

A high-clearance vehicle is probably needed beyond what's left of the second corral. Also, don't drive into the wash at the end of the drive route without 4WD. You will get stuck in sand if you drive into it with only a 2WD vehicle. The surrounding vegetation will hide your vehicle soon after you start hiking...remember where your vehicle is when you leave it to climb.
