Ascent Trip Report(this is the third part of our Colvin-Blake day hike, back over Colvin and down to St. Huberts)
As we started going back up to Colvin, I began feeling acidosis and my power output fading. Fortunately, JP was leading and setting a pace that forced me to keep plugging. I was still breathing fine, but my strength was definitely not up to my standards. When we got to the top, we took a short break, but kept motoring downhill along Colvin Trail. Now we were racing against the clock, as I had a limited time to catch a ride from Montreal back to Quebec City. If I missed it I would have to take a bus (which was the case).
At this point, we were really just going as fast as we could. When we got to the junction to Elk and Nippletop, we took another short break and noticed a small patch in the snow. One of the guys ahead of us had thrown up. I made me feel better about my own fitness, but at the same time, I knew how hard it is to keep going when you're exhausted.
The pace was still as fast as we were going when we went up that stretch of trail in the morning, and I was amazed how a great hiking partner JP was. I finally caught a glimpse of the two guys ahead of us halfway down the Shortcut Trail. They were taking a break, so we passed them with a nod.
We got the Lake Road Trail, congratulated ourselves for a really strong hike, and started the 2km walk in the park back to the AMR gate. When we stopped to strap our walking poles on our bags, the two other guys leap frogged ahead. We decided to set our pace to theirs, and let them get to the gate before us, but halfway there, they took another break. They must have been really stretching their last reserves. We nodded again and shortly after checked out at the gate. We finally stumbled into two deers grazing on the Ausable Club lawns. They weren't afraid at all and we calmly walked by. This was just one more thing to make this hike especially enjoyable.
Finally, we left the parking at 4:00pm and got burritos and candy to soothe our stomachs. I got in Montreal too late for my ride back to Quebec, but I was able to hop on the 7:00pm bus at the last second. I was even able to get two seats on which I crashed for the 2.5 hours ride. And to my great surprise, when I got home, dinner was ready, and my roommates had a glass of wine to spare.
