Ascent of Óros Taigetos on 2011-10-30Date: | Sunday, October 30, 2011 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | 4x4 Vehicle | Peak: | Óros Taigetos | Location: | Greece | Elevation: | 2404 m / 7890 ft |
Ascent Trip ReportI had originally intended to climb from the carpark at the end of the tarmac road but was feeling pretty bad (only the amazing weather made me even think of attempting the climb) so elected to start from the refuge instead. As per Rob Woodall's trip report, I got within a few hundred metres of the refuge before even the RAV started hitting the rocks so I parked and walked to the refuge.
Path above refuge is well marked (one of the best marked I've seen in Greece) and weaves its way steeply up the with the E face of the mountain looming above. The path makes good use of the natural rock strata, the Plakes (paving stones), allowing for a traverse across the steep E slope that would otherwise be extremely difficult. Once on the ridge line, its a simple 20 mins to the summit, with some amazing views in all directions, esp S along the Mani and N to the mts beyond Tripoli (c50 miles).
Round trip took 4 hrs dead. Definitely one of the most rewarding climbs I've done in Greece.
