Ascent Trip ReportComing from the south, leave the Palisades Parkway at exit 12, and head north on NY-45 for 0.9 miles. Just before the junction with US-202, turn right into the signed Gurnee Park and park in the roughly paved lot before the gate. The hiking trail (not the gravel road) goes steeply uphill from the south side of the lot, very close to the highway. Follow it for about 1/2 mile with some minor ups and downs, to an unmarked bump just to the right of the trail. Beyond this bump is one more minor descent and a short climb to a bump topped with a couple of boulders, and beyond that the trail drops off more seriously. GPS verifies that the unmarked bump to the right of the trail is the 802' summit of South Mountain. Look for sporadic green blazes along the trail, more on the return.
