Ascent Trip Report

First find the popular holiday village of Braunlage. Leave the village in the direction of Schierke (starting point for Brocken)and just on the edge find a left turn signposted "Kaffeehorst". This refers to an eclectic cafe at the bottom of one of the winter ski lifts. There were only 2 cars there when I arrived at about 11.30am, but the cafe was open.

From the car park there is actually a signposted route all the way to the top, or you can take a shortcut by ascending the obvious ski slope directly (path runs under the lift to the left of the main slope, and then turning right onto the first forest road that you cross. This leads eventually to a crossroads where another left turn takes you to the steep top part of the hill, which can be ascended up either a long metal staircase next to the landing zone for the skijump, or to the left up the original path.

The tower where the skijumpers start is actually open to the public as a viewing tower and gives a clear view in all directions. The summit marker itself is to the right of the summit restaurant as you reach it from this path.
