Ascent Trip ReportI arrived in the village of Schierke in time for the first train to the top. I had intended to walk up and take the train down but the thick mist and howling wind actually made the train the highlight of the visit so I took it both ways.
In low season it is possible to park at the station. Driving from Braunlage you reach a crossroads about 1km from Schierke. Schierke is left but the narroe and one-way Bahnhofstrasse (Station Road) is straight on. In normal season it will be very busy and you probably have to park at the village and walk 15 minutes to the station.
In 2011, parking was 5 euros and the return train ride 28 euros, quite expensive for the distance. See http://www.hsb-wr.de/ for details.
From the top it was a 5 minute struggle against the conditions to reach the top and back. With no view I didn't linger and took the same train back down again.
It is also possible to walk from the station, well signposted and surfaced path, about 6.5km and 400mH one way.
