Ascent Trip ReportA moderate eastbound trail hike ....... 3.4 miles, 1h45 hours RT.
I came to this area of the White Mountains for a 4 day hike primarily because of the weather .... all the other areas near my home were forecasting rain. The goal of the trip was to bag Mount Hancock-Northwest Peak and to complete the "NH 52 WITH A VIEW" list for the second time (see my Mount Tremont TR for the first completion) ......I recently discovered that this list is an evolving one, 2 peaks have been since removed from the list and replaced by Black Mountain-Middle Peak and Mount Roberts (see its TR).
From Glen, hwy intersection #302/16, I traveled north on 16 to Jackson and found my way to Carter Notch Road on the west side of Wildcat Brook. I drove north on Carter Notch Road, after checking out the brooks beauty, for 3.7 miles to a right turn on Meloon Road (sign reads "Black Mountain Ski Trail"), .25 miles to the TH Parking.
The signed Black Mountain Ski trail climbs moderately to a cabin witch can be rented for use (good views to the west), where it continues to the wooded summit ..... offering only with partial views through the trees. I returned the same way.
I went to the North Conway "EMS store" and picked up a pair of Keen Targhee 2 Boots, 130$, then drove/overnighted at the Blackberry Crossing (4 seasons) Campground on the Kancamangus Hwy. Tomorrow I will go for the bushwack to Hancock-Northwest.
Dan "Wingfoot" Bruce's TRAIL ETIQUETTE RECOMMENDATION (in "The Thru-Hiker's Handbook") as it applies to the use of cell phones on the trails ..... before using the cell phone ask yourself, "Would I take a dump here?", if the answer is "No", you don't use the phone.
