Ascent Trip ReportJuly 1, 2009: Went for a solo attempt on Mount Hood for my birthday. Started at 8 am to let the ice warm up a bit, left from the Timberline Lodge. Glacier travel was moderate, I stayed on the ridge majority of the way before getting to the Western vent. Steep approach to the final push, snow and ice were soft enough I didn't need crampons, just my axe. Weather was super clear! I got a full view of the surrounding other volcanoes on my list (Rainier, Adams, St. Helens, Jefferson, Three Fingered Jack). Only 3 other people made the summit that day (probably because it was a Wednesday). Great day for a solo, excellent conditions, still lots of snow for a fast decent.
