Ascent of Katahdin-South Peak on 2011-10-08| Others in Party: | Luiza Manceau Myriam Chênevert Philippe Brigitte Benoit | | Date: | Saturday, October 8, 2011 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Katahdin-South Peak | | Location: | USA-Maine | | Elevation: | 5260 ft / 1603 m |
Ascent Trip ReportAs we progressed on the Knife Edge, the day was passing by very quickly. I watched regularly where the mountain's shadow was hitting down in the Great Basin. I saw Chimney Pond get shrouded, then the ranger station, then the gazebo and crew house. I was feeling that we might get back to camp at darkness and was trying my best not to look impatient towards Luiza. She was actually doing very nice speed for the work involved and I admired her willpower. I could see that some spots required all her attention just to stay confident.
Soon though the south slope eased off and exposure was much lessened. Now we were going uphill again towards Katahdin South and it was quicker to navigate. From there, I could see that Brigitte was now reaching Katahdin. 15 minutes later, Philippe and Myriam joined her just as we reached the last 'peak' before the real summit. We were now all alone on the ridge having passed the last hikers going in the opposite direction.
From there we only had to cross a short distance before we would join the others.
